OUR MEMBERS HOLD THESE PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Mountain Training's Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor scheme offers the United Kingdom’s highest National Governing Body Awards for instructing mountaineering.

Whatever your age or level of skill, you can benefit from a day out with a Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor or a Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor. Mountaineering and Climbing Instructors provide the majority of training and assessment of candidates for the Mountain Training qualifications. They also provide technical consultancy and training for a wide range of outdoor activity centres, training schemes and voluntary organisations.

Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor

Mountaineering and Climbing Instructors are qualified to instruct mountaineering in non-winter conditions including all aspects of rock climbing, both single and multi-pitch, plus hill walking and scrambling. (This award was formally known as the 'MIA')

Some instructors also hold the Winter Mountain Leader qualification which allows them to lead mountain walking in winter.

Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor

Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructors are qualified to instruct the same aspects of mountaineering as a Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor, and in addition also technical snow and ice climbing and winter mountaineering. Instructors with this qualification will have already passed the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor, and Winter Mountain Leader (Winter ML) qualifications, after which they undertake further training and assessment in teaching winter climbing and mountaineering. (This award was formally known as the 'MIC')

Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor trainees are yet to pass the assessment but have undergone a nine day training course. They will hold the Mountain Leader and or Winter Mountain Leader qualification and some will also be qualified Rock Climbing Instructors.

MEMBERSHIP OF AN ASSOCIATION

A Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor does not need to be a member of the AMI. However those that are members are required to adhere to the following:

• Professional Standards
• Code of Conduct
