Mountain Training's Association strategy 2023-28
Origins of the association
The initial concept for a members’ association for Mountain Training candidates was put forward in 2001 by John Cousins (Chief Executive Officer for Mountain Training United Kingdom and Ireland) with a proposed remit to:
- Keep candidates informed about Mountain Training developments
- Create a forum for candidates to share ideas
- Enable candidates to access and create further training
The association was formed in 2005.
Members' survey
To find out if this was still what members wanted the association to do, a survey was sent out to members and the following headline results were returned:

Main function sections, the core principles for the formation of the association still apply - the notable addition is increasing the public's awareness of the association and its members.
To that end the mission, vision and values of the association have been updated to:

For ALL Mountain Training candidates to join the association because it stands for excellence, community, currency and professionalism, and is recognised as such by the wider public.

The plans
Plans will be reviewed and progress against them noted throughout each year, and they will be assessed more thoroughly after 3 years, late 2025/early 2026, to ensure fit and compatibility with changing circumstances or trends.
