North Wales regional Group - Autumn/Winter programme
North Wales regional volunteers have been busy putting together a regional programme for the winter months, which includes, the popular night nav evenings, Welsh language sessions and pizza eating!
Peter Rutherford, the Access officer for Snowdonia National Park has kindly offered to give us an overview of
access in the Park. This is going to be a great evening and particularly relevant at the moment. This event is based in Capel Curig on Wednesday 1st December and a payment of £1 will be needed on the evening to pay for the hire of the hall.
We don't always get to practise our night navigation skills, so these popular free peer led night navigation sessions are great opportunities to refresh and enhance your skills. These are particularly useful if you are preparing for a Mountain Training walking qualification assessment. There will be a broad plan for the evening which can be adapted to the aspirations of those attending. Peer led sessions mean that all those attending hold a responsibility for safety and will be part of the decision making process for the evening.

A FREE (almost!) Welsh Language and Landscape workshopAn evening with
Branwen McBride who is kindly hosting these sessions, this has been really successful in the past, so book early!
"Welsh words on a map can seem quite confusing if you don't understand what they mean and aren't too sure how to pronounce them. I've lived and worked in North Wales for over thirty years and I love maps – and the descriptive words which you can find on them!
Come along for the evening, and we'll discuss some of the words commonly used, what they mean (or might mean!) and how they can help you to understand the shape of the land or its use. A few key words can be a helpful navigational aid and can also be interesting discussion points with groups who you may be taking out into the hills. I will bring some maps and a few resources but feel free to bring your own maps or relevant books for us to look at too!

A day with the Great Orme Shepherd
Dan Jones the
Great Orme Shepherd is once again offering us a few hours to explain his job and give some demonstrations before finishing with home reared burgers for lunch! Some of you may remember the day we spent with him on Snowdon a few years back...
Dan comes from a farming family, having spent over 20 years farming in his own right in North Wales, including several years as the Snowdon Shepherd and now the last 5 years on the Great Orme as the shepherd for the National Trust, he describes himself as a Conservation Farmer, putting nature first.
Broadly the morning will look like this:
- 10am Meet at the summit car park
- Welcome and tour of the farm
- Overview of sheep farming in North Wales
- Explanation about different breeds
- Sheepdog demonstration
- Shearing demonstration
The morning will end with lunch provided by Dan with his home reared lamb There will be plenty of opportunity for questions. A payment of £6 is payable on the day to Dan for lunch.
If you book any of our regional events, please commit to attending! If you find you are unable to attend, please cancel your space as early as possible to enable others to book and if something comes up last minute, be courteous and get in touch to let us know. We'll let you know about our pre-christmas Pizza night once we have more details.
Myself, Mike and Branwen are looking forward to a great winter and we hope to see you on some workshops..
