Hill & Mountain Skills Registration

The Hill & Mountain Skills scheme is nationally recognised and there are guaranteed standards across the United Kingdom and Ireland. Everyone who attends a course must first register for the scheme and pay the registration fee.

Why?

The registration fee contributes to a number of products and services from which you will benefit. They include:
  • Scheme handbook – this is designed to support you throughout the scheme and provides information about the content of each course. The handbook is in pdf format and available to view online or download from our website.

  • A digital record of your training history – your Candidate Management System (CMS) account is a personalised record of your Mountain Training journey. Any courses/training that you attend are recorded and verified to help you keep track of your development. CMS is continually developing in response to feedback from its users.

  • DLOG – a digital logbook in which you can record all of your mountaineering activities.

  • A copy of Safety on Mountains – a useful resource for all hill walkers which can be used to prepare for your course, support you during your training or as a reference tool in the future. Topics covered include: clothing and equipment, hazards, navigation, camping, sanitation and access.

  • Quality assurance – all providers and tutors have been carefully selected and inducted by Mountain Training to deliver the Hill & Mountain Skills scheme. You can be sure that if you are attending a Hill Skills or Mountain Skills course it will be run by suitably qualified and experienced leaders and will follow a syllabus which has been designed to inspire, as well as develop your skills and confidence. All courses are monitored by Mountain Training staff and this often involves moderation visits.

  • A certificate – on completion of a Hill Skills or Mountain Skills course you will receive a certificate confirming your attendance on the course.

  • Support – the staff team at Mountain Training offer administrative and technical support to people involved with our schemes and regularly review the Hill & Mountain Skills scheme to make sure its meeting the needs of developing hill walkers.

  • There are a range of pathways through Mountain Training and the Hill & Mountain Skills scheme is a great stepping stone to our qualifications.
