Mountain Training UK & Ireland

Mountain Training UK
About Mountain Training UK & Ireland administers six qualifications and is also the coordinating body for all of the national Mountain Training organisations of the UK and Ireland. Each national Mountain Training organisation is responsible for managing skills and qualification schemes along with the course providers they have approved to deliver these schemes. The procedures for providers and tutors are harmonised; however slight differences may be required to accommodate regional differences and organisational structures.

The role of Mountain Training UK & Ireland is to coordinate the shared objectives of the national Mountain Training organisations. Its areas of work include:
  • Development and management of the Mountain Training website and Candidate Management System.
  • Administration of the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor, Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor, International Mountain Leader, Foundation Coach, Development Coach and Performance Coach qualifications.
  • Liaison with Government and other external bodies.
  • Creation of the official handbooks of the schemes.
  • Development of the Mountain Training Association (MTA).
  • Providing services for the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI), British Association of International Mountain Leaders (BAIML) and the British Mountain Guides (BMG).

        Adge Last - Chair
Adge has been passionate about climbing and the outdoor environment since his first introduction to the Scottish mountains when at school in Edinburgh. These experiences shaped his career and lifestyle choices, having worked in and managed outdoor centres, taught in schools, freelanced, managed a climbing wall, worked for the British Mountaineeering Council and Mountain Training England and been the outdoor education adviser for a Local Authority.

Always highly motivated to be active outdoors and having recently retired from fulltime employment, he will have less need to boulder or bike with lights in the dark! This change has enabled him to do more of the things he enjoys – whether that is training enthusiastic adults on an Hill and Moorland Leader course, cranking on (relatively!) small holds, seeking multi-day backcountry adventures or grappling with the complexity of an expert witness case.

Adge was on the inaugural committee of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors when it was first established, and currently volunteers on a number of committees including the Peak District National Park Local Access Forum and the Alpkit Foundation.
Ellie Ablett Ellie Ablett MBE - Vice Chair
Since my recent retirement from the Royal Navy, having reached the rank of Commodore, I have retrained as an adventure activities leader and am developing my credentials in the sector while enjoying a better life balance. I live in the Bannau Brycheiniog and I am an active National Park Ambassador who has a deep passion for experiencing, sharing and preserving our outdoor spaces. This complements my personal commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion which drove me to establish a professional network for Naval Servicewomen in 2013 which continues to thrive and for which I was awarded the MBE in 2014.

I am a Hill and Moorland Leader, Duke of Edinburgh Award Assessor, a Public Speaker and a Performance Coach who continues to deliver professional coaching for women in the Royal Navy. My husband has been an adventure activities provider for over a decade and unsurprisingly, our hobbies mostly involve the outdoors - hiking, biking, swimming, SUP, campervan travel and gardening.

With almost three decades of public sector leadership and management experience, I am delighted to serve on the Board of MTUKI putting my experience to good use in support of a cause that I am passionate about.
        Sean Wood
I worked within the adventure sports sector for several years, including completing a foundation degree in Adventure sports and management before making the transition to Olympic sports with British Athletics and further onto Cricket with the England and Wales Cricket Board. I still enjoy climbing and hill walking recreationally and regularly spend time in the hills with friends. Alongside my work, I am also a trustee of the Beaudesert activity centre and spend time leading scout groups in outdoor activities.
        Stephen Saddler
Stephen has been involved professionally and recreationally in Adventure Education and Sport for forty years. Gaining the Mountaineering Instructor Certificate in 1985 he continues to be an active climber and mountaineer who also dabbles in paddling, skiing and bikes, occasionally working as a freelance technical advisor and instructor. He has been involved in the development of individuals’ skills and experience in the UK and overseas. Stephen has been a provider of Mountain Training courses and led expeditions overseas. He is committed to the work of Mountain Training in the UK.
        Lucy V Lucy Vincent
Lucy has over 20 years’ experience in the not for profit sector having worked as Director of Marketing for the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, Dogs for Good and Adoption UK. She headed up large teams at Natural England and the Audit Commission. In the former, she developed the Countryside Code for England and Wales, two new national parks for England and the communications surrounding new laws regarding “open access” land.

Her management of press and media teams includes crisis management from avian influenzas to fire strikes (Director of Communications at Warwickshire County Council). She’s campaigned on Severn tidal flow and a variety of conservation and recreational access issues as well as producing and appearing in BBC radio programmes from Madagascar and the Philippines.

Lucy studied a Master’s Degree in Marketing at Kingston University and Public Sector management at the University of Birmingham.

In her spare time Lucy enjoys rock climbing and mountaineering and has travelled to mountains and for adventures worldwide. She believes firmly in developing her skills and enabling others to enjoy the outside too and so has obtained her Rock Climbing Instructor and Mountain Leader qualifications and has just completed the International Mountain Leader scheme.

Lucy’s ambition with Mountain Training United Kingdom and Ireland is to ensure that the needs of people with disabilities and women and girls are considered and that as many people as possible are given the confidence and access to develop their mountain skills.
