Three Mountain Training organizations are recruiting for Trustee/ Director roles. These are key roles in the strategic leadership of Mountain Training.
  • Mountain Training UK & Ireland is recruiting for a Chair of the Board, a Honorary Treasurer and one Director.
  • Mountain Training England is recruiting for an Honorary Treasurer and one other Director.
  • Mountain Training Cymru is recruiting for two Directors.

MTUKI is seeking to recruit a Chair of the Board an Honorary Treasurer & a Director to join its six-person Board. The Board consists of a mix of independent Directors and Directors with sector-related knowledge and experience. In this round of recruitment we invite applications from both people who are independent and people with experience of the adventure activities sector.

This post is non-salaried. Directors’ travel and reasonable expenses are reimbursed.

How is Mountain Training UK & Ireland Organised?

Mountaing Training UKI is a Company Limited by Guarantee and a registered Charity. MTUKI owns a subsidiary company, Mountain Training Publications (MTP), which manages the publication of MTUKI’s series of textbooks and its magazine, The Professional Mountaineer. MTP’s business is conducted in conjunction with MTUKI.

MTUKI consists of a Council of representatives of elected member organisations. The Members support the Board of Directors and act as a consultation body. They have the authority to elect Directors annually. The functions of the Directors are to set the budget and organisational strategy, oversee its implementation by the staff and to run the company. The Directors are supported by a Chief Executive Officer who in turn is supported by a staff complement.

What Does Mountain Training UK & Ireland Do?

Mountain Training UKI’s main aim, as stated in its Articles of Association is: “the advancement for the public benefit of education and training (in conjunction where appropriate with other persons or bodies) in the skills required for doing, leading and instructing safe hill, mountain, moorland and countryside walking, mountaineering and rock, ice and indoor climbing, and other associated activities, and to offer advice on matters of training and safety”

The role of Mountain Training UKI is to coordinate the shared objectives of the national Mountain Training boards.

Our areas of work include:
  • Development and management of our website, the Candidate Management System and the online logbook
  • Administration of the Mountaineering & Climbing Instructor, the Winter Mountaineering & Climbing Instructor, the International Mountain Leader and the climbing Coaching Scheme
  • Liaison with Government and other external bodies
  • Creation of the official handbooks of the award schemes
  • Development of the Mountain Training Association (MTA)
  • Providing services for the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI), British Association of International Mountain Leaders (BAIML) and the British Mountain Guides (BMG)

What Will My Role Be?

Please see the Role Descriptions for specific details of the Chair, Honorary Treasurer & Director roles. To attend Board and Members’ meetings and oversee the running of the business. The Directors of MTUKI are responsible for setting the strategy and budget, overseeing the management of the operational side of the business and ensuring the safe running of the company by implementing good governance.

The ability to think strategically and creatively, to exercise independent judgement and a willingness to speak your mind are some of the key attributes we are looking for. What Time Commitment is Required?

There are four Directors’ phone conferences per year. There are three Council meetings per year. Two Council meetings are held online and one is held in person/ blended attendance at one of the National Mountain Centres, Tollymore Mountain Centre in Northern Ireland, Glenmore Lodge in Scotland and Plas y Brenin in North Wales. As a Director you will need to be able to commit to seven meetings per year and be willing to communicate with the Board of Directors and the executive staff outside of those meetings from time to time.

We are the awarding body in Wales for Mountain Training qualifications in walking, climbing and mountaineering leadership. We also administer two personal skills schemes, one for walking and one for climbing. We select and support a number of providers to deliver the courses throughout Wales. Our work includes promotion, administration and quality assurance.

In addition, Mountain Training Cymru offers advice and promotes good practice among the walking, climbing and mountaineering communities within Wales.

MTC’s vision is to create a diverse, healthy and active nation where anyone can enjoy the benefits of lifelong participation in walking, climbing and mountaineering, supported by inspirational volunteers, leaders, instructors and coaches.

What will my role be?

What level of commitment is required?

You will be expected to attend four directors’ meetings and three meetings of the Council per year. Directors meetings are held in person and online. Two out of three Council meetings are held online. We try to get everyone together once a year, although any in person meetings can be held blended/ online.

Directors must be willing to communicate with the board of directors and the executive staff outside of those meetings from time to time. Directors also participate in sub-committees and special project groups such as the finance sub-committee, the screening committee and scheme review groups.
