References FAQs

1/ Do I need a reference to accompany my registration?

Yes if you are registering for the International Mountain Leader, Mountaineering Instructor Award or Mountaineering Instructor Certificate scheme.

2/ Who can write a reference?

The referee should be able to endorse your suitability as a potential leader/instructor and vouch for the accuracy of your application. It is therefore highly desirable that potential referees have an overview of the personal and work experience of an applicant (this can be achieved by sharing your DLOG with the referee).

If you are registering for the MIA or MIC scheme, your reference can be written by a long term climbing partner or suitable employer, preferably a Mountaineering Instructor, a Mountain Guide or Mountain Training course provider.

3/ Does my referee need to have an account on CMS?

Yes. They do not need to be a candidate (i.e. have registered for one of our schemes) but they do need to have created an account on CMS.
