Lowland Leader - the scheme so far

The Lowland Leader scheme was launched in April 2014 and has had a very successful first 11 months. It was designed for people who are new to outdoor leadership or those with plenty of experience leading groups in lowland terrain who want or need formal recognition of their competence. The leadership opportunities for Lowland Leaders are varied and far reaching, from the South West Coast Path to the Great Glen Way; walking in lowland areas can be just as spectacular as walking high up in the mountains.

During the first 11 months 850 people registered for the scheme and so far 542 people have completed a training course and 30 people have been granted exemption from training (because they have already completed Hill and Moorland or Mountain Leader training). There have been 21 assessments and 83 people have successfully gained the qualification.

The Lowland Leader scheme is the closest to a 50/50 gender split of all our awards with registrations currently 56% male and 44% female. Geographically, the training and assessment courses have been fairly well spread out across Great Britain with Southern Scotland (25%) and the Midlands (20%) hosting the lion's share. The biggest user group appears to be Duke of Edinburgh's Award leaders although there are no statistics to support this at the moment.
