BMC AGM 2018
As you may be aware the British Mountaineering Council will hold its
Annual General Meeting on 16th June 2018. We would like all of our candidates who are BMC members to:
- be aware of the relevance and importance of this event to Mountain Training, and
- get involved.
The BMC is being challenged to develop a more accountable system of governance, which improves representation, allows ourselves and the BMC direct access to governments and also ensures we remain eligible to receive any associated funding. Every national Mountain Training organisation is currently linked to its respective government via their sports councils. Through this there is an endorsement of our role as an awarding body and support for our development work through various funding avenues. This investment supports a range of development projects which include:
- the current review of climbing qualifications,
- diversity projects,
- improved candidate pathways,
- our continuing development of the quality of everything that we deliver and
- our work to help instructors, leaders and coaches to remain current and active.
The British Mountaineering Council is the governing and representative body for climbing, hill walking and mountaineering in England and Wales. Mountain Training Cymru, Mountain Training England and Mountain Training UK all work very closely with the BMC to ensure that the ‘coaching workforce’ matches the various needs of climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers.
Members of the BMC are now being asked to consider changing the Articles of Association that help form and run the organisation in ways that are both compliant with the 2006 Companies Act and meet the governance standards required by Sport England.
The Directors of MTC, MTE and MTUK all support the Articles proposed by the National Council (Item 9, Option A), not least because they should ensure that we can continue to be heard by the English government as well as helping us to continue to be a well-coordinated, joined up group of organisations with a coherent plan for the activities that mean so much to all of us.
How can you help?
If you are a current member of the BMC then you should have received an email from onlinevoting@electoralreform.co.uk notifying you of the BMC AGM 2018. We ask that you review the AGM proposals and decide what is in your best interests as a BMC member to support. The BMC needs your vote. In order for your voice to be heard please use one of these options:
- attend the AGM or
- vote online and appoint someone else to cast your proxy vote (using the link in the email from the BMC).
Your proxy will vote according to your instructions or if you select ‘discretionary’ or leave the vote blank your proxy will be free to vote as they see fit. John Cousins, the Chief Executive of MTUK and a BMC member will be attending and we welcome you to nominate him as your proxy (his membership number is M214729 and address is c/o Siabod Cottage, Capel Curig, Conwy LL24 0ES).
