Join us to celebrate our 50th

Mountain Training`s 50th Anniversary Logo To help celebrate our 50th anniversary, Mountain Training England would like to invite candidates, providers, course directors and board members (past and present) to join Chairman Rab Carrington and Treasurer Barry Lynn on a walk up Kinder Scout on 16th October.

As a summit with its own fascinating history, Kinder Scout will provide the perfect location for a fiftieth birthday party, mountaineering-style. The celebratory walk will start from the car park in Edale at 12.30. Come along and find out how Mountain Training has evolved over the years, learn about plans for the future and quiz Rab and Barry while enjoying a walk in the Peak District. No walk would be complete without a drink and some food in a nearby pub so we’ll be heading to The Cheshire Cheese Inn (run by Craig Offless, one of our providers) to continue the celebrations afterwards.

Fifty years of training people to operate safely in the mountains is a real achievement and since the Mountain Leadership Certificate was created in 1964, the schemes on offer have increased to include not just walking leadership but also mountaineering instruction, supervising and coaching climbing (indoors and outdoors) as well as an introductory scheme for novice hill walkers.

The aim of the Mountain Leadership Training Board (as it was originally named) was to provide training standards and safe practice for those working and leading groups in the mountains. It was set up by the British Mountaineering Council and the Central Council of Physical Recreation with four approved course providers: Plas y Brenin, Outward Bound Trust Mountain Schools, Brathay Hall Centre and White Hall Centre for Open Country Pursuits. All four of these organisations are still operating as outdoor centres today with Plas y Brenin and White Hall still delivering Mountain Training schemes.

Be a part of history and join us on 16th October for an afternoon on Kinder Scout.
