If you already have a first or second edition, we strongly recommend you consider buying a third edition. Here's why:
- The 'History of climbing' chapter has been updated to incorporate the history of more women climbers and include more recent achievements, up to and including the pandemic and the 2020 Olympics.
- The 'Movement skills' chapter includes lots of new photos and illustrations showcasing various movement techniques to help you improve.
- Part C (used to be Part III) chapters have been reordered and content adjusted to reflect the indoor -> sport climbing -> trad climbing progression that is common now. Skills and techniques are introduced in a logical order without repetition within these chapters.
- The 'Indoor climbing' chapter used to be 4 pages long, now it’s 26. This is largely due to the introduction of primary skills like tying in and belaying which were previously covered in other chapters.
- There is now a chapter called 'Inspiring others' which is designed to support coaches and instructors to deliver climber-centred sessions, regardless of whether they're taking people into the mountains or introducing novices at a climbing wall or single pitch crag.
- The multi-pitch chapters contain more illustrations and descriptions about using a belay device in guide mode, as well as updated illustrations to support with problem solving.
Two chapters have been removed (on adaptive climbing techniques and via ferrata/high ropes) to make space for the updated content. Adaptive climbing techniques are covered through alternative publications, while via ferrata and high ropes courses are both quite specialised activities and advice can be found through the European Ropes Course Association or British Mountain Guides (for via ferrata).
