What's Possible
A film by Mountain Training England in collaboration with Frit Films and Roxanna Barry
In 2022 we launched the
Disability Training Fund and the first person to enquire about it was
Juliet Scott. Over a few phone calls Jules described her squad, the people she coaches and the volunteers she works with.
As a result, Mountain Training England supported the delivery of a
Foundation Coach training course and a
Climbing Wall Instructor training course for three people from Jules’ squad. In the summer of 2023 we commissioned a film with
Frit Films / PassionFruit Pictures and
Roxanna Barry behind the lens. The film celebrates the journeys and experiences of Nikki, Jack and Stanley.
Nikki passed the Climbing Wall Instructor assessment in July 2023 and continues to volunteer with Juliet’s squad.
Juliet said: "Nikki has absolutely loved doing the training courses and has immersed herself volunteering twice a week, watching other coaches and carefully writing notes and recording everything she observes and learns"
"Nikki took more time to learn the hard skills on the Climbing Wall Instructor scheme and has been practicing with her very technically competent son Jack who was also on the courses. She loves working with small children and that really showed in the confidence and imaginative way that she delivered mini sessions for Foundation Coach. She has agreed with Mountain Training on reasonable adjustments for the Climbing Wall Instructor assessment. A bit more practice and I am confident she can pass both assessments by the end of this year. This opportunity has given Nikki a new lease of life and a sense of purpose and pride."
Jack’s passion is trad climbing and this shines through clearly in the film. He is also working towards the
Mountain Leader qualification.
"Jack has now passed his
Rock Climbing Instructor assessment. He is able to deliver a great session for Foundation Coach and is developing some of the skills around the job that include talking to clients and parents before climbing sessions and feeding back afterwards."
Stan is still climbing and is pursuing a career in engineering.
"Stan was very competent both in terms of the people and delivery skills required for climbing and the technical skills required for the Climbing Wall Instructor. He is currently volunteering with one of my classes once a week to get the relevant experience ready for assessment and I have no doubt he will pass confidently."
Thank you so much to Juliet Scott, Frit Tam and Roxy Barry. Special thanks to mum Sue, who did lots of hard work of driving people around.
